There have been sports arenas of all kinds in all of the cities that we’ve been to in the last few days. Memorial Stadium, the Hoosier football arena at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, Paul Brown Stadium, home of the football Bengals and Great American Ballpark, home of the baseball Reds next door, both in Cincinnati. We left Cincinnati, and drove to Virginia. On the way to Charlottesville, we passed through Charleston, West Virginia and saw the University of Charleston West Virginia and Laidly Field, the football home of the Golden Eagles. Continuing on, in the afternoon, we made it to Charlottesville, the town where University of Virginia has Scott Stadium for its football Cavaliers. Today, we arrived in Pittsburgh. Of course, Pittsburgh, the three rivers city, is the former home to the baseball Pirates’ Three Rivers Stadium. Today, we’ll see PNC Park, home of the Pittsburgh Pirates, and Heintz Field, home to the Pittsburgh football Steelers.
But, the stadiums aren’t the only things that are making this tour a sports tour. For $7.99, three of us purchased the Tiger Woods PGA iPhone application. There are constant and random exclamations of “I’m hitting my fairways” and “You need back spin on your tee-off” and I’m +35 after nine hole at Pebble Beach” and “I’m only +5 after 12.”
There have been conversations in the fan about the competitive aspects of real golf, there have been admissions that some of us, while we can hang with most all sports, we somehow can’t hang with golf on TV, unless it’s Tiger Woods in the last round of a major, on a Sunday afternoon. Then we can watch.
Even more sports things are constant Cubs updates, smart phones, whose batteries die, a result of constantly reloading the ESPN Score Center application. When TheSuperficial.com reported Erin Andrews’ latest bit action in the news, we all knew about it and none of us asked, “Who is Erin Andrews anyway?” We all watch Sunday Night Baseball and we know who she is. Eric, in Bloomington, wore his Rodman, #91, Bulls Jersey with vintage black and orange Jordans on his feet to our show. At one point, we talked about how cool it would be to join a pickup game of basketball as we slowly drove past a park, but we passed for fear of being schooled too hard. When we get the opportunity, we’ll throw the Frisbee and run until we’re out of breath, more athletics. Today, we saw the stadiums in Pittsburgh, tonight, we’ll be checking scores and draining batteries, and tomorrow, we’ll head to Rochester and we’ll see what we see along the way.
